Begin using brand strategy in your client workflow with these actionable steps. Taming the brand strategy beast is a daunting prospect for many designers. Designers often ask me how they can increase their project values, and start to use brand strategy with their clients.
Follow a Proven Brand Strategy Framework
Use a brand strategy template, that follows a proven brand strategy framework. This is fundamental. Take your time with it to deeply understand the process. As you get comfortable with the framework over time you can make it your own, but to begin with, learn and get comfortable with the process.
Lead With the Right Questions
Learn to ask the right questions. Learn to be critical, and ask questions to help the process and in turn, your clients. Don’t jump to solutions. Use the framework to methodically approach the process.
Focus on guiding the process, not the client to answers, let the client find their own answers through the process.
Build Confidence Through Brand Strategy Workshops
Start by using the framework within your usual client discovery sessions through informal brand strategy workshops. As you build the confidence you can lengthen these workshops.
I recommend designers begin with the two-day brand strategy approach, which splits the process into two sessions.
Learn the Process, Language, and Tools
Practice and gain confidence, for the first few times use the brand strategy at the beginning of the project during discovery and as you get more familiar and comfortable you can add more features and go deeper with each client.
